The Do’s and Dont’s of Credit Counseling and Debt Negotiations

I’ve been in the credit counseling industry for many years and have come across some useful advice by some of my previous clients.
1. Know yourself. Know your limitations and boundaries. Never enter a credit counseling program that is too expensive or outside of your financial limits. Likewise, do not cheat yourself by not devoting as much as you should.
2. Know the options. Do not enter a credit counseling or debt settlement program without being presented all the options. You would never buy a computer at Best Buy without checking out the prices at Circuit City. Similarly, take note of the debt management programs available before committing yourself to anything.

For a credit counseling service to be worthy, you need to get a few questions answered. There are a lot of honest credit companies. However there are also many charlatans running the show.
To start with, here are some of the the starter questions:
Major affiliation:
Does the credit counseling agency have major industry affiliation like the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling. If yes, the agency deserves some credibility. These associations have some standards that need to be met and followed.
Large fees:
Large upfront fees are usually a red flag. A good credit counseling company will charge a small fee to set up your account and then bill you a fee to administer your plan each month. If you pay a large setup fee and the company is not reputed, they might disappear overnight.
Is that possible?
To gain your business, at times credit counseling agencies will make promises that are unrealistic. If it seems too good to be true, it really is.
If you feel the promise to be unrealistic, ask for the promises in writing. This way you have good evidence in case legal action becomes necessary.

Luckily for Jim and others in his predicament–the average college student carries $2,400 in credit card debt some schools are providing credit counseling to their students. Montana State University in Bozeman, for example, operates Student Advocates for Financial Education. During a typical session at the busy office, counselors help students map out a budget, track expenditures, and find ways to cut back on expenses. “Tuition has gone up, the cost of living has gone up, and student wages have not kept pace,” says Deborah Haynes, an associate professor at the school who oversees the program.
